How to fix dry skin on feet

Short answer
To fix dry skin on feet, moisturise regularly, protect the skin from friction, and check persistent cracks or scale for an underlying condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best starting habit
- Apply an unperfumed moisturiser after washing
- Protective measure
- Reduce rubbing with breathable, well-fitting footwear
Why feet become dry
Foot skin loses moisture when washing is frequent, water is hot, air is dry, or footwear creates rubbing. Thickened heels can split because pressure pulls against stiff, dehydrated skin. Itch, redness, silvery scale, or dryness beyond the feet can point toward a condition rather than simple dryness. Asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis can all affect the skin barrier in different ways.
Check between the toes as well as the heels. Burning, peeling, or moisture in the toe spaces may need a different assessment from rough heel skin.
A practical foot-care routine
Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry carefully, including between the toes. Apply an unperfumed emollient while the skin is still slightly damp, concentrating on the heels and other rough areas. Wear breathable socks and well-fitting shoes, and avoid picking at flakes. A foot file may be used gently on intact thick skin, but do not file open cracks.
If home care is not enough, a clinician can tailor emollient therapy and check whether eczema, psoriasis, or another problem needs separate treatment. Keep creams off macerated toe spaces unless advised.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for deep or recurring cracks, bleeding, significant pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or a foul smell. Seek prompt advice if a foot wound is not healing or if you have reduced sensation or a condition that affects circulation. Persistent one-sided scale or severe itch also deserves review because it may not be ordinary dryness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, or another cause; which moisturiser texture suits your feet; how to handle cracks; and which symptoms mean the plan needs changing. Mention new shoes, work exposures, foot products, and whether other areas are affected.

Questions people ask
Should I peel thick heel skin?
Do not pull or cut it; gentle care and regular moisturising reduce the chance of opening the skin.
Why do my feet stay flaky?
Ongoing flaking can reflect irritation, eczema, psoriasis, or another skin problem and may need an examination.
