What should you know about the first measles vaccine?

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause fever, cough, sore eyes and a widespread rash. Vaccination gives the immune system a safe way to practise recognising measles. Protection develops after the immune response has had time to build, so vaccination does not treat an infection that has already started.

Check the child’s immunisation record and arrange the first dose according to the schedule recommended by your local health service. Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, severe allergies, immune problems, or medicines that affect immunity. Mild soreness, tiredness or a short-lived fever can occur after vaccination. Keep the record available because later doses may be advised for stronger, longer-lasting protection.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination. Contact a clinician about a persistent high fever, unusual drowsiness, or a child who is becoming less responsive. Fever or swollen glands can also occur with infections such as measles; a new rash with fever warrants prompt clinical advice.
