Firm Lump Under the Skin: What to Know

Note whether the lump is tender, warm, red, fixed in place, or freely movable. A painful, hot lump can fit an inflamed infection such as a boil. A smooth, slower-growing lump may be a cyst or other benign nodule, but appearance alone cannot establish the cause.
