The video view can help the clinician look at the ear canal and eardrum while you watch, when appropriate. It may reveal wax, swelling, redness, fluid, discharge, or a change in the eardrum. The camera does not measure every aspect of hearing and a clear picture does not rule out every cause of ear symptoms. A diagnosis is based on the image together with pain, hearing changes, fever, balance symptoms, medical history, and the rest of the examination.

Describe when the symptoms began and whether they affect one or both ears. Tell the clinician about ear drops, cotton-bud use, recent infection, swimming, trauma, tubes, or ear surgery. Keep still while the tip is positioned and report discomfort immediately. Avoid inserting objects into the ear to clean it before the appointment. For a child, bring a familiar caregiver and explain that the device looks at the ear; cooperation is easier when the child knows what to expect.

Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe pain, bleeding, pus-like discharge, severe dizziness, or swelling behind the ear. Emergency help is needed for fainting, breathing trouble, confusion, or a person who is rapidly deteriorating. Do not wait for a recorded video review when symptoms are intense or rapidly changing.

Ask whether the eardrum was fully visible, what might explain the symptoms, whether hearing should be tested, and how soon follow-up is needed.
