The device combines a small light with a camera and a single-use or cleaned viewing tip, depending on the service. The clinician gently positions the tip at the ear opening rather than pushing it deeply into the canal. The enlarged image may show earwax, irritation, fluid behind the eardrum, redness, discharge, or changes in the eardrum. An image can make an explanation easier, but it does not by itself provide a complete diagnosis. Symptoms, examination findings, and sometimes hearing tests are considered together.

Keep your head still and tell the clinician if the ear feels tender. Do not place cotton buds, drops, or other objects in the ear before an examination unless a clinician has advised you to do so. Mention ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, dizziness, recent swimming, injury, or previous ear surgery. In a child, a calm explanation and a caregiver's support can help the examination go smoothly. You may ask whether the image can be shown to you and what the next step will be.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe ear pain, new discharge or bleeding, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, swelling behind the ear, or a child who appears very unwell. Seek emergency help when breathing difficulty, fainting, or severe weakness occurs. A digital image should not delay assessment when symptoms are sudden or severe.

Ask what the image shows, whether earwax or inflammation affects the view, whether hearing needs checking, and which symptoms should prompt a return visit.
