What Causes Swollen and Numb Fingertips?

Paronychia is inflammation or infection of the skin beside the nail. It can cause tenderness, swelling, redness, throbbing, and sometimes a pocket of pus; nearby swelling can make the fingertip feel numb or altered. Biting nails, pulling hangnails, manicures, and repeated wet work can damage the protective barrier. A skin yeast infection may contribute to persistent irritation around moist nail folds.

Numbness can also follow a cut, impact, pressure on a nerve, cold exposure, or circulation trouble. If the fingertip is pale, blue, cold, weak, or numb without a visible skin problem, the cause may not be limited to the nail fold.

Remove rings from the affected hand before swelling increases. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid biting or cutting the nail fold, and do not puncture or squeeze a suspected abscess. Protect the fingertip from pressure and extreme heat or cold while sensation is reduced. Note when the swelling began, whether it is worsening, and whether movement or color has changed.

A clinician may recommend local care, antibiotics for a confirmed bacterial infection, or drainage when a collection of pus is present. The right treatment depends on examination; leftover antibiotics or creams may not treat the actual cause.

Seek same-day medical care for spreading redness, severe throbbing pain, pus, fever, red streaks, rapidly increasing swelling, or difficulty bending the finger. Urgent assessment is needed when the fingertip becomes blue, pale, cold, very tense, or suddenly loses sensation, or after a serious crush or puncture injury. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek advice early.

Ask whether the swelling is in the nail fold or deeper fingertip, whether drainage or a swab is needed, how to protect sensation, and which changes mean the infection or circulation problem is worsening.
