Fingertip pins and needles: what you should know

The sensation may feel like prickling, buzzing, burning or reduced feeling in one or more fingers. It can come and go, and the pattern often gives a clinician useful clues.

Leaning on an arm, sleeping with a bent wrist or gripping a tool for a long time can briefly compress a nerve. Symptoms that return with wrist or elbow movement may relate to nerve irritation. A condition such as Peripheral Neuropathy can affect sensation in the hands, while Type 2 Diabetes and Vitamin B12 Deficiency are possible underlying contributors. Hypothyroidism can also be associated with nerve symptoms.

Fast breathing during fear or a panic episode can change the level of carbon dioxide in the blood and cause tingling around the hands or mouth. Generalised Anxiety Disorder may make these episodes more likely, but fingertip tingling has many possible explanations. The symptom itself does not establish a diagnosis.

Change position, loosen anything tight around the wrist, and gently move the fingers and hand if pressure may have caused the sensation. Protect numb skin from heat, sharp objects and cold because reduced feeling can make an injury harder to notice.

Make a note of when the tingling began, which fingers are affected, whether it is on one or both hands, and whether weakness, pain, neck symptoms or a new medicine appeared with it. Arrange a routine appointment if it keeps returning, lasts beyond a brief positional episode, or interferes with handling objects.

Call emergency services immediately if the tingling starts suddenly with facial drooping, trouble speaking, new weakness, confusion, severe dizziness or difficulty walking. These can be warning signs of Stroke. A Transient Ischaemic Attack can cause similar sudden symptoms that improve, and still needs urgent assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly worsening numbness, loss of hand strength, severe pain, or symptoms after a significant injury. Do not drive yourself if sudden neurological symptoms are present; note the time they started and get emergency help.

Your clinician may examine sensation, strength and reflexes and decide whether blood tests or further nerve assessment would help.
