Why Are My Fingers and Toes Itching?

Short answer

Itching of the fingers and toes can come from dry skin, eczema, contact irritation, infection, scabies, hives, psoriasis, or another skin condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Dry, cracked skin can itch more after washing or exposure to dry air. Atopic dermatitis may cause recurring itch, redness, and inflamed patches, while contact dermatitis can follow a new soap, glove, cosmetic, metal, or cleaning product. Asteatotic eczema is another dry-skin pattern. Itch between fingers or around the wrists, especially when household contacts itch too, can occur with scabies.

Skin yeast infection may cause moisture-related redness and soreness in folds or between toes. Psoriasis or lichen planus can affect the skin and nails, while hives tend to create raised itchy areas that come and go. The symptom itself does not identify one condition; the distribution, rash, timing, and exposures matter.

What may help

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser often, especially after bathing, and wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Keep feet dry, change damp socks, and avoid scratching; cool compresses and short nails can reduce skin damage. Stop a newly introduced product if it clearly coincides with the rash, but do not apply someone else’s prescription cream.

Arrange a review if itch persists, recurs, disrupts sleep, or affects the nails. A clinician may look for scale, cracks, blisters, burrows, or infection and choose treatment accordingly. Avoid sharing towels or footwear when a contagious cause is possible.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent help for itching with facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives. Get prompt medical care for painful warmth, pus, red streaks, fever, deep cracks, or rapidly worsening swelling. A clinician should also assess a new widespread rash, severe night-time itch, or symptoms in an infant, pregnancy, or someone with reduced immunity.

Questions for your doctor

Tell your doctor when the itching began, whether fingers and toes are affected together, what products or medicines changed, whether anyone else itches, and whether there are cracks, blisters, scale, swelling, or nail changes.
