What Causes a Fingernail to Separate From the Nail Bed?

When the nail plate lifts, air can create a white or yellow-looking area beneath it. A knock, picking, manicures, tight gloves, or frequent wet work may loosen the plate. Nail fungus can thicken or discolor the nail while it separates; nail psoriasis can produce lifting, pits, or debris beneath the nail. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

The detached portion does not reattach to the nail bed. As the nail grows, healthy nail may gradually replace it, provided the underlying trigger has settled. Fingernails grow slowly, so improvement is assessed over time rather than from day to day.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the loose edge, and do not pull or dig underneath it. Protect the fingertip from knocks and prolonged soaking; wear gloves for cleaning or wet work and dry carefully afterward. Avoid nail glue, harsh solvents, and cosmetic coverings until the cause is clearer. Do not share nail tools, and clean tools between uses.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if separation persists, affects several nails, or comes with thickening, discoloration, scaling, or repeated episodes. A clinician may examine the nail and surrounding skin and may test material when infection is suspected. Treatment depends on the finding; removing a nail is not a routine solution.

Seek prompt medical care if the finger becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or drains pus, or if redness is spreading. An injured nail needs assessment when there is severe throbbing, a deep cut, marked bruising, or difficulty moving the finger. A dark or changing streak, bleeding without a clear injury, or separation limited to one nail also deserves an examination rather than home treatment.

Ask what pattern suggests injury, fungus, psoriasis, or another nail disorder; whether a nail sample is useful; how to protect the exposed nail bed; and what changes should trigger an earlier review.
