Fingernail lifted off the nail bed

The detached portion may look white, yellow, or opaque because air has entered the space beneath the nail. It may catch on clothing and can collect debris. A single nail can lift after a knock, pressure, picking, or chemical exposure. Nail Fungus and Nail Psoriasis are other possible explanations, especially when the nail is thickened, crumbly, pitted, or repeatedly affected. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Keep the nail short by trimming only the loose edge with clean clippers. Do not pull off attached nail, scrape underneath, or seal the gap with glue. Wear gloves for wet or rough tasks and dry the finger carefully afterward. Pause manicures, artificial nails, and harsh removers until the nail is assessed. A clinician may treat an underlying infection or inflammation; Nail Surgery is reserved for selected problems and is not a home remedy.

Book an appointment if separation persists, spreads toward the cuticle, affects several nails, or returns after growing out. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bleeding, a dark mark after injury, or a nail that became loose without an obvious cause. A clinician may examine the nail surface and surrounding skin and decide whether testing is useful.
