Finger osteomyelitis treatment: what to know

Osteomyelitis is an infection inside bone. In a finger, it may follow a puncture, bite, open injury, surgery or an infection that has spread from nearby skin and soft tissue. Assessment can include an examination, blood tests and imaging; a sample from the wound or bone may help identify the germ and guide medicine. The team also checks blood flow, sensation, movement and the condition of the nail or fingertip.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and attend planned reviews, even if pain and swelling settle. Keep any dressing clean and follow instructions about washing, elevation and finger movement. Treatment can include drainage of pus, removal of dead bone or tissue, and repair of a wound.
