What should you know about finger nails splitting?

A horizontal split or peeling at the tip often follows cycles of soaking and drying, detergents, polish remover, or picking. A vertical split may begin at a small injury and extend as the nail catches. If the nail is also thick, yellow, crumbly, painful, or lifting, a clinician should consider conditions such as Nail Fungus. The appearance does not identify the cause by itself, and a sample may be useful before treatment.

Cut the nail to a comfortable short length, file snags gently, and moisturise the nail and surrounding skin several times through the day. Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged water contact. Avoid ripping the split, biting, aggressive buffing, and glue on broken skin. Keep tools clean and do not share them. If the split reaches the skin, cover it lightly while arranging advice rather than forcing the edges together.

Seek care if splitting affects several nails, persists after reducing exposure, or repeatedly returns. Prompt assessment is appropriate for swelling, warmth, pus, bleeding, severe tenderness, a dark streak, or sudden change after an injury. These signs may need treatment beyond moisturising.
