What should you know about finger carbuncle?

Several nearby hair follicles can become involved in one deeper inflamed area. The skin may be red, tender, warm, swollen, and draining, sometimes with several visible openings. A clinician may need to distinguish a carbuncle from a single abscess, an infected wound, or a deeper finger problem.

Wash your hands before and after touching the area. Gently clean it, cover it with a fresh dressing, and keep the hand elevated when swelling is prominent. Do not puncture, cut, or squeeze the lesion, and do not share towels. Medical treatment may include antibiotics for a skin infection or a procedure to release trapped pus, depending on examination findings.

Seek prompt care if redness is spreading, pain is escalating, fever develops, red streaks move up the hand or arm, or finger movement becomes difficult. Same-day assessment is especially appropriate for diabetes, reduced immunity, poor circulation, or a rapidly enlarging swelling.

Ask whether the infection needs drainage, whether a sample should be tested, how to dress the wound, and which changes mean the infection may be reaching a tendon or joint.
