What to expect during a fine needle aspiration procedure

You usually remain awake while the clinician identifies the target, cleans the skin, and places the needle. The needle may be guided by touch or imaging, depending on the body's area and how easily it can be felt. Suction draws cells or fluid into a syringe, and the clinician may make several passes to collect a useful specimen.

The material goes to a laboratory for assessment. A result can be reassuring, abnormal, or insufficient for a firm interpretation. The test is diagnostic sampling, so it does not automatically remove a solid lump or replace the wider assessment needed to plan treatment.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, bleeding disorders, pregnancy, and previous difficulty with procedures. Ask for specific instructions about eating, drinking, or medicines. Wear comfortable clothing that permits access to the target area.

Keep the puncture site covered as advised and use only the pain relief recommended for you. Ask when normal activity can resume, how the result will arrive, and what happens if the specimen is insufficient or does not explain the imaging finding.

Notify the treating service if bleeding persists, pain worsens rather than settles, or the site becomes hot, red, increasingly swollen, or produces discharge. Urgent care is appropriate for severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, or heavy bleeding.

Ask where the needle will enter, whether imaging will guide it, how long the visit may take, when results are expected, and which follow-up tests are possible.
