Fine Lines and Dark Circles Under the Eyes

The skin around the eyes is delicate and can show creasing from repeated smiling, squinting, dryness, and ultraviolet exposure. Dark circles may reflect pigment, visible vessels, a hollow that casts a shadow, or rubbing from allergy or eczema. Atopic dermatitis can cause itch and rubbing, while tear trough hollows create a structural shadow. These possibilities can overlap, but one appearance does not establish a single diagnosis.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser around the orbital area and apply sunscreen carefully without getting it into the eyes. Avoid rubbing, harsh scrubs, and untested lightening products. Managing itch or eczema may reduce rubbing-related darkening. If a hollow is the main shadow, a qualified clinician may discuss under-eye filler; this area needs careful assessment because swelling and other complications can affect the eyes. Treatment for pigment or fine lines may be different from treatment for volume loss.

Arrange medical review for sudden one-sided darkening, persistent swelling, pain, discharge, vision change, or a rash that is cracked or weeping. Seek urgent help for vision loss, severe eye pain, rapidly increasing swelling, breathing difficulty, or a serious reaction after a product or injection. Persistent itch should be assessed so an underlying skin condition is not missed.

Ask whether the darkness is pigment, visible vessels, shadow, or irritation; whether eczema or allergy is contributing; which products are safe near your eyes; whether under-eye filler is appropriate; and what symptoms after treatment require urgent contact.
