What should you know about fibula plate and screws?

The fibula helps form the outer side of the ankle. A plate sits along the bone and screws anchor it to the fragments, limiting unwanted movement when a fracture is displaced, unstable, or affects the ankle joint. Fracture fixation surgery may be considered after examination and imaging; it is not needed for every fibula fracture. The hardware is intended to support healing, while the bone gradually regains strength. Tenderness, swelling, stiffness, and sensitivity around the incision can occur during recovery.

Follow the surgeon's instructions about wound care, elevation, walking, and weight-bearing. Use crutches or a walker if prescribed, keep dressings clean, and avoid changing activity because pain has briefly improved. Gentle movement of permitted joints can help limit stiffness. Later, physiotherapy may address ankle range, calf strength, balance, and walking mechanics. Hardware removal is not routine; it is discussed when symptoms, healing, or another clinical reason makes it appropriate.

Contact the surgical team for worsening redness, warmth, drainage, fever, wound opening, or pain that is becoming harder to control. Seek urgent help for a suddenly cold or discoloured foot, new numbness or weakness, severe tight swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness. A new fall or twist should be reported if it changes pain, alignment, or the ability to bear weight.

Ask why fixation is recommended, where the plate will sit, and how long walking restrictions may last. Clarify wound care, driving, work, exercise, follow-up imaging, physiotherapy goals, and what symptoms would make hardware review necessary.
