What should you know about fibula fracture cast?

The fibula is the slimmer bone on the outer side of the lower leg. A cast may be used when the fracture needs protection from bending, twisting, or accidental knocks. The cast may cover the foot and ankle as well as the lower leg, depending on where the break is and how stable it is. A clinician may first use a temporary splint if swelling is expected, then change it to a full cast. Plaster of Paris and fibreglass cast material have different weight, rigidity, and water-care requirements.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team has confirmed that its material can get wet. Elevate the leg when it is swollen, move the toes gently if allowed, and use crutches exactly as instructed. Do not insert objects inside the cast to scratch the skin, trim the edges, or bear weight before you have been cleared. Keep follow-up appointments so alignment, swelling, skin, and healing can be checked. Physiotherapy may help restore ankle movement and strength after protection is reduced.

Contact your care team promptly if pain or tightness is increasing, toes become numb or unusually cold, swelling does not ease with elevation, or the cast cracks, becomes wet inside, or rubs the skin. Seek urgent help for severe pain with marked pressure, new weakness, blue or pale toes, or trouble moving them. A sudden increase in calf swelling or breathlessness also needs urgent medical assessment.
