What should you know about FibroScan and hepatitis B?

A handheld probe sends gentle vibrations through the liver and measures how quickly they travel. A stiffer liver can reflect fibrosis, while advanced scarring may be associated with cirrhosis. The reading is one part of an assessment: inflammation, congestion and other factors can affect stiffness, so a clinician interprets it alongside your history, examination and blood results. Hepatitis B can be present without obvious symptoms; some people notice fatigue or dark urine, but symptoms do not show how much scarring is present.

Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking and medicines before the appointment. Wear clothing that allows access to the right upper abdomen. The scan usually takes only a short time, does not require a cut or needle, and you can normally return to usual activities afterwards. Ask how your result fits with hepatitis B activity and whether you need repeat monitoring, a liver function test or antiviral assessment. Avoid alcohol and do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice.

Contact a clinician promptly for new yellowing of the skin or eyes, worsening dark urine, increasing abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion or marked drowsiness. Seek emergency help for severe symptoms, collapse or difficulty staying awake. A FibroScan appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment when symptoms change suddenly.
