What should you know about fibrocystic lumps in your breasts?

Fibrocystic change is a pattern rather than one single lump. It can include fluid-filled cysts, thickened tissue and areas that feel lumpy or rope-like. Symptoms may fluctuate with hormone changes and may include tenderness or a sense of fullness. The texture can be different in each breast.

A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, but most breast lumps are not cancer. Feeling the lump cannot establish its cause, so examination and imaging are used to decide whether sampling is needed. A breast change that seems familiar should still be checked if it persists or evolves.

Record where you feel the lump, how long it has been present and whether it changes in size or tenderness. A clinician may examine both breasts and nearby lymph nodes, then arrange imaging or a biopsy based on your age, history and the appearance of the finding. Keep follow-up appointments and compare changes with the same area rather than repeatedly pressing it.

Arrange prompt review for a lump that is new, hard, fixed, enlarging or persistent, or for nipple inversion, bloody discharge, skin dimpling or an enlarged underarm node. Seek urgent care for a hot, red, swollen breast with fever. These warning signs guide urgency; they do not establish a diagnosis.
