When should a fibroadenoma be removed?

Short answer
A fibroadenoma may be removed when it grows, causes discomfort, remains uncertain after assessment, or is worrying you.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical finding
- A mobile, solid breast lump may fit a fibroadenoma.
- Possible approaches
- Monitoring, tissue sampling, or removal may be discussed.
What the decision means
A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and supportive tissue. Many are monitored when examination and imaging fit this diagnosis and the lump is stable. Removal is not automatically needed. The choice depends on its size, position, change over time, symptoms, your age and medical history, and whether the diagnosis is clear.
An ultrasound can show whether a lump has features that fit a fibroadenoma. A biopsy can examine cells or tissue when imaging cannot settle the question. A benign result can support monitoring, while a result that is unclear or does not match the scan may lead to further assessment.
What you can do next
Arrange a clinical review for a new, enlarging, painful, or persistent lump. Take note of when you first noticed it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any skin or nipple changes. Your clinician may recommend follow-up imaging, a biopsy, or discussion of breast lump excision.
If removal is chosen, ask where the incision will be, what tissue will be sent for examination, how the wound is cared for, and what changes in breast shape might be expected. Monitoring also needs a clear follow-up plan so you know when to return.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt medical assessment for a rapidly enlarging lump, new skin dimpling, redness or warmth that does not settle, an inward-pulling nipple, bloody nipple discharge, or a new lump in the armpit. These signs need examination; they do not by themselves establish the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Does the examination and imaging match a fibroadenoma? Do I need a breast ultrasound or breast biopsy? What change would make removal advisable, and what follow-up interval do you recommend?

Questions people ask
Does every fibroadenoma need removal?
No. A stable lump with a clear benign assessment may be monitored, while growth, symptoms, uncertainty, or personal preference can change the discussion.
What test may come before removal?
Your clinician may use examination and breast ultrasound, and may recommend a breast biopsy when tissue confirmation is needed.
