Fibroadenoma under the armpit

Breast tissue can extend toward the armpit, and a fibroadenoma in that area may feel like a smooth, mobile lump near the outer breast. However, the armpit also contains lymph nodes, hair follicles, sweat glands, and skin. A tender lump after an infection, shaving irritation, or an inflamed skin lesion can feel different from a breast-related lump.

Location and touch cannot establish the diagnosis. The clinician will ask when it appeared, whether it changes with hormonal shifts, and whether you have breast symptoms, skin inflammation, fever, or a recent infection. A finding can be benign and still deserve assessment.

Arrange an examination for a new, persistent, or enlarging armpit lump. A breast ultrasound can assess the outer breast, the armpit, and the lump's structure. If imaging does not give a clear answer, a breast biopsy or another form of tissue sampling may be discussed. Avoid repeatedly pressing the area, and note tenderness, redness, size changes, and any related breast or nipple changes.

If the lump is confirmed as a fibroadenoma and remains stable, monitoring may be an option. Removal can be discussed if it causes discomfort, grows, or remains diagnostically uncertain.

Seek prompt assessment for a hard fixed armpit lump, rapid growth, persistent swelling, breast skin dimpling, new nipple inversion, or bloody discharge. Fever, redness, warmth, or worsening pain may signal infection and needs timely medical review.

Ask whether the lump is in breast tissue or a lymph node, whether ultrasound should include both areas, and what findings would lead to biopsy or breast lump excision.
