Fibroadenoma symptoms

Most fibroadenomas are noticed as a firm, round or oval lump that moves slightly under the fingers. The lump may be painless, mildly tender, or more sensitive before a period. Some are found during an examination or scan rather than because they cause a sensation. One breast can contain more than one lump, and more than one fibroadenoma can occur over time.

Symptoms do not prove that a lump is a fibroadenoma. Breast tissue can feel different with hormonal changes, cysts, infection, or other conditions. A new lump, a change in an old lump, or a symptom that persists should be assessed in context rather than self-diagnosed.

Notice the location, approximate size, tenderness, and whether the lump changes with your cycle. Arrange a clinical examination for any new or persistent lump. A breast ultrasound can show whether the finding is solid or fluid-filled and can help guide the next step. If the appearance is not clearly benign, a breast biopsy may be discussed. Keep reports from earlier assessments so the clinician can compare findings.

A confirmed fibroadenoma that causes no trouble may be monitored. If it grows, becomes painful, or remains uncertain, options may include removal after discussion of benefits and possible effects.

Seek prompt care for a rapidly growing or hard fixed lump, new skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a lump in the armpit. Breast redness, warmth, fever, or escalating pain needs timely review because infection can require treatment.

Ask what features support fibroadenoma, whether imaging is needed, whether tissue sampling is appropriate, and which changes should bring you back sooner.
