Sharp pain with a fibroadenoma

Fibroadenomas are often painless, although some become tender or ache, particularly when nearby breast tissue is sensitive. A sudden sharp sensation may also arise from chest-wall muscle, a strained ligament, hormonal breast tenderness, a skin problem or another breast condition. Pain location, timing, triggers and associated changes help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Pain alone does not identify the cause of a breast lump. A lump that is painful can still need examination, and a painless lump can also need assessment. Ultrasound can examine a palpable area, while biopsy may be considered if the findings are unclear or changing.

Record when the sharp pain occurs, how long it lasts, whether movement or touch triggers it, and whether it follows a menstrual or hormonal pattern. Wear supportive clothing if that feels helpful and use only pain relief that is safe for you. Arrange clinical review if pain persists, recurs in one spot, or is linked to a growing lump. Seek prompt assessment for a new or enlarging lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous unusual discharge, or swelling in the armpit. Urgent care is appropriate for severe pain with spreading redness, fever, marked swelling, chest pain with breathlessness, or feeling faint. Do not use the presence of a fibroadenoma to explain away a new warning sign.
