Fibroadenoma: pericanalicular and intracanalicular patterns

How the structures involved in Fibroadenoma differ from normal

Short answer

Pericanalicular and intracanalicular describe the way fibrous tissue surrounds or compresses breast ducts within a fibroadenoma.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pattern
Pericanalicular surrounds ducts; intracanalicular compresses them.
Nature
A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump.
Assessment
Examination and imaging guide whether tissue sampling is needed.

What these terms mean

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and connective tissue. In a pericanalicular pattern, the tissue grows around the ducts while the ducts keep their general shape. In an intracanalicular pattern, the growing tissue presses on the ducts, which can make them look slit-like. A report may mention one pattern or a mixture of both. These words describe microscopic architecture; they do not by themselves tell you whether a lump needs removal.

A breast lump is often benign, but its cause cannot be established from touch alone. Ultrasound can show whether a lump has features commonly associated with a fibroadenoma, while biopsy can examine cells or tissue when the clinical or imaging picture needs confirmation.

What to do next

Take the report to the clinician who arranged your assessment and ask how the examination, imaging and any tissue result fit together. A stable, comfortable lump may be monitored with the plan your clinician gives you. Removal may be discussed if the lump is growing, uncomfortable, difficult to classify, or causing significant concern. You can read about Breast Ultrasound, Breast Biopsy and Breast Lump Excision to understand these options.

When to seek care

Arrange a prompt breast assessment for a new lump, a clear change in an existing lump, skin tethering, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, or swelling in the armpit. Seek urgent medical help for severe breast redness with fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or feeling seriously unwell. These signs need assessment regardless of whether a fibroadenoma has been considered.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the finding is typical on imaging, whether tissue sampling is advised, what change should trigger review, and whether monitoring or removal fits your symptoms and examination.

Questions people ask

Do these terms mean the lump is cancer?

No. They describe the arrangement of tissue in a fibroadenoma and are not a diagnosis of cancer.

Does every fibroadenoma need removal?

No. The choice depends on features such as growth, symptoms, examination findings and imaging or biopsy results.
