Understanding fibroadenoma pathology results

Pathology is the laboratory examination of tissue obtained through a biopsy or an operation. The report may describe the fibrous supporting tissue, glandular spaces, cell appearance, and whether the sample matches a fibroadenoma. It may also mention whether the sample is adequate and whether another area should be examined.

Words such as benign describe the tissue examined, but the result must be interpreted alongside the examination and imaging. A report can contain technical terms that do not explain the whole picture by themselves. Ask the clinician who requested the test to explain how the result fits your breast findings.

Keep a copy of the report and ask which sentence gives the final diagnosis. Confirm whether the result matches the scan and examination, whether follow-up is needed, and what changes should lead to an earlier appointment. If the lump remains troublesome, grows, or does not match the test findings, your clinician may discuss repeat sampling or Breast Lump Excision.

Breast Ultrasound may be used to assess the lump before or after tissue testing. Breast Biopsy is the procedure that obtains a small sample for pathology; the choice of procedure depends on the lump and the clinical question.

Contact your care team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, fever, worsening pain, bleeding from the biopsy site, or a rapidly changing lump. Seek review for new skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or bloody discharge as well. A previous benign result should not be used to dismiss a new or different breast change.

Ask what the final diagnosis is, whether the sample and scan agree, and whether the report recommends monitoring or another procedure. You can ask whether Breast Biopsy sampling was sufficient, whether Breast Ultrasound follow-up is planned, and when Breast Lump Excision would be considered.
