When a fibroadenoma is painful to touch

A fibroadenoma is usually a firm, mobile breast lump formed from glandular and connective tissue. Pressure can irritate the tissue around it, especially after frequent checking, a knock, exercise involving the chest, or hormone-related breast sensitivity. Pain can also arise from a cyst, infection, inflamed skin, or the muscles and ribs beneath the breast, so the location and trigger matter.

During an assessment, a clinician may examine the lump and surrounding breast and decide whether Breast Ultrasound would help. If the result is uncertain or the lump has concerning features, Breast Biopsy may be discussed.

Try not to press the lump repeatedly. Wear supportive clothing during activity, protect the area from friction, and use a wrapped warm or cool compress according to which feels better. Keep a brief record of tenderness, movement, menstrual timing, and any visible changes. A pharmacist can check whether a suitable pain reliever is compatible with your medicines and health history.

Arrange a clinical review if the lump has never been checked, the tenderness continues, or the lump feels different. A clear description of what triggers pain can help guide the examination.

Seek prompt care for redness, heat, swelling, fever, a rapidly enlarging lump, skin dimpling, a newly inverted nipple, or bloody discharge. Severe pain after an injury also warrants review. These signs need assessment because infection, injury, or another breast condition may require treatment.
