Does a fibroadenoma need to be removed?

A confirmed fibroadenoma can remain stable and cause little trouble. Monitoring avoids a procedure when examination and imaging are reassuring. Removal may be considered if the lump grows, causes pain or pressure, changes the breast contour, is large, or cannot be confidently distinguished from another type of lump. A diagnosis based only on feeling the lump is not enough, because several breast conditions can feel similar.

A breast ultrasound may help characterize the lump. If the findings are uncertain, a breast biopsy can examine a small tissue sample. Discuss whether follow-up imaging is suitable and how you should notice change without repeatedly pressing the area. If removal is chosen, breast lump excision takes the lump out for laboratory examination; ask about the incision, scarring, recovery, and whether the breast shape may change. Removal is a shared decision, not a rule based on the word fibroadenoma alone.

Arrange prompt review for a lump that is enlarging or newly appears, or for skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, a fixed area, redness, warmth, marked swelling, or fever. These features need assessment because urgency is determined by the change itself, not by whether a previous lump was called a fibroadenoma.

Ask how certain the diagnosis is, whether biopsy or repeat imaging is needed, what growth would change the plan, and what removal would involve. Ask about observation, scar placement, pain control, and recovery time.
