Fibroadenoma: a clear patient guide

Fibroadenomas are formed from breast glandular and connective tissue. They may be round or oval, smooth, firm, and able to move beneath the fingers. Some cause no pain, while others become tender or more noticeable with hormonal shifts. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, but most breast lumps are not cancer; the direction matters because a symptom cannot identify its cause. Imaging and, when needed, tissue sampling provide more useful information than self-examination alone.

Start with an appointment for a breast examination. A breast ultrasound can help distinguish a fluid-filled area from a solid lump and assess its shape and borders. Depending on your age, examination, imaging appearance, or whether the lump changes, a breast biopsy may be recommended. When results support a fibroadenoma and symptoms are limited, observation with follow-up can be appropriate. If it is painful, enlarging, large, or difficult to distinguish from another lesion, discuss breast lump excision and its possible benefits and drawbacks.

Contact a clinician promptly if you notice a new lump, clear growth, a firm fixed area, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, or a visible change in breast contour. Breast redness, warmth, swelling, or fever deserves timely attention. Keep any imaging or follow-up appointment even when the lump is not painful.
