Fibroadenoma and hyperplasia: what is the difference?

A fibroadenoma is a benign-appearing, solid mass formed by glandular and connective tissue. Hyperplasia means that cells have increased in number. It may be identified in a tissue sample and can have different forms, so the word alone does not describe a palpable lump or determine a diagnosis.

A report may use these terms in different contexts. Your clinician can explain whether the finding came from an examination, a scan, or a biopsy, and whether it needs follow-up. A breast ultrasound can help characterize a palpable solid lump; a biopsy examines cells directly.

Take the report to the clinician who arranged it and ask which finding is present, where it is located, and whether it is linked to the lump you can feel. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal medicines, family history, and any recent change in size or tenderness.
