How is a fibroadenoma treated?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and supporting tissue. It can feel smooth, firm, and mobile under the skin. The label describes the lump; it does not confirm its identity without an examination and, when needed, imaging or tissue testing.

Hormonal changes can affect its size or tenderness. A breast ultrasound can help show whether a lump has features consistent with a solid fibroadenoma. A biopsy may be suggested when the examination or scan does not provide enough certainty.

Arrange a breast assessment for a new or changing lump. Keep a simple record of when you noticed it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any pain, skin change, or nipple discharge. Once the diagnosis is clear, a clinician may recommend observation with follow-up examinations and imaging.

Removal is an option for a lump that is enlarging, uncomfortable, difficult to assess, or causing ongoing worry.
