What is the link between fibroadenomas and hormones?

Fibroadenomas contain breast tissue that can respond to hormonal shifts. Some people notice a lump feels fuller, more sensitive, or easier to find at particular points in the menstrual cycle. Changes can also occur during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when using hormonal medicines. These patterns may help a clinician understand your symptoms, but timing alone cannot identify the cause of a breast lump.

Note when tenderness or fullness appears, whether it settles after your period, and any recent change in contraception, fertility treatment, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Arrange an assessment for a new lump or a known lump that changes. A breast ultrasound may help characterise it, while a breast biopsy may be considered if the examination or imaging is not conclusive. Do not stop prescribed hormonal treatment without discussing it with the prescriber.

Seek prompt advice for a lump that persists or enlarges, a fixed area, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness, warmth, or unusual swelling. Fever with breast pain needs timely medical attention. Hormonal timing should not be used to dismiss a persistent or visibly changing breast sign.

Ask whether your cycle, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or hormonal medicine could explain the tenderness or size change, and whether imaging is needed. Ask how to monitor the lump and what findings would lead to biopsy or breast lump excision.
