What does a fast-growing fibroadenoma mean?

Some fibroadenomas enlarge in response to hormonal activity, and a fast change can still have a benign explanation. However, speed of growth cannot identify a lump by itself. The clinician will consider the examination, the breast's overall appearance, prior results, and whether the lump is mobile, tender, or associated with skin or nipple changes. This is a reason for timely evaluation, not a diagnosis.

Book a prompt breast assessment and explain how quickly the change occurred. A breast ultrasound may show the lump's margins and internal structure. If the findings do not provide enough certainty, a breast biopsy can provide tissue for examination. Breast lump excision may be discussed when a lesion is large, symptomatic, persistently enlarging, or not adequately characterised by other checks.

Seek urgent medical advice for rapid swelling with redness, heat, fever, severe pain, skin breakdown, marked skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or bloody discharge. These features can occur with several conditions and need an examination. If the change is gradual but clear, arrange an appointment soon rather than repeatedly checking the lump at home.

Ask what has changed compared with earlier findings, which test is most suitable now, and when results will be reviewed. Ask whether biopsy or excision is recommended and what symptoms should bring you back sooner.
