Can a fibroadenoma go away?

Some fibroadenomas stay a similar size, while others become smaller or are no longer easy to feel. Hormonal changes can alter how prominent a lump seems. A lump that feels smaller has not necessarily been identified with certainty, because breast tissue can change around it. A new lump, a returning lump, or a change in a known lump still needs clinical context.

Keep any recommended follow-up appointment and bring previous scan or examination details if available. A breast ultrasound can help track the lump and distinguish solid tissue from a fluid-filled change. If the appearance is uncertain, a breast biopsy may be offered. Removal can be discussed if the fibroadenoma is uncomfortable, continues to grow, causes anxiety, or cannot be confidently characterised; breast lump excision is one option to ask about.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new or changing lump, bloody nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, warmth, or increasing swelling. Fever with a painful breast also needs timely attention. A lump becoming less noticeable does not cancel the need to report other breast changes.

Ask how the lump will be monitored, what change should trigger an earlier visit, and whether its examination and imaging are sufficiently characteristic. Ask about the advantages and drawbacks of biopsy or excision for your situation.
