What does a fibroadenoma feel like?

Fibroadenomas are solid breast lumps made from glandular and connective tissue. They may feel rubbery or firm, have a clearly defined edge, and shift when you press around them. Some are tender, especially when breast tissue feels fuller around a menstrual period, while others cause no discomfort. Texture alone cannot confirm the diagnosis: other benign breast changes can feel similar, and a breast lump should be assessed rather than identified by touch.

Arrange a clinical breast assessment for a new or unexplained lump. The clinician may recommend a breast ultrasound to examine whether the lump is solid or fluid-filled and how it is shaped. If the findings are unclear or need confirmation, a breast biopsy can examine a small tissue sample. Keep a simple note of when you noticed the lump, whether it changes with your cycle, and any pain or skin changes.

Seek prompt medical care for a new lump that remains, enlarges, becomes fixed, or is accompanied by skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, redness, warmth, or swelling. Fever with a painful, hot breast also needs timely assessment. These signs do not identify the cause, but they make an examination more urgent.

Ask whether the lump's size, mobility, and imaging appearance fit a fibroadenoma, whether follow-up imaging is needed, and what change should prompt an earlier review. You can also ask when a biopsy or breast lump excision would be considered.
