Fibroadenoma examination: what to expect

Short answer
A fibroadenoma examination combines a breast history and physical check with imaging when needed to understand a lump’s features.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- History
- Timing, tenderness, cycle changes, and prior breast issues may be discussed
- Physical check
- The clinician assesses the lump, breast skin, nipple, and underarm area
- Possible test
- Ultrasound or biopsy may be considered
What the clinician may assess
The clinician may ask when you found the lump, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is pain, discharge, or a skin change. During the examination, they assess the breast and nearby underarm area, noting the lump’s position, size, firmness, mobility, and the skin or nipple over it. These observations guide the next step but do not provide a diagnosis in isolation.
Imaging can add information that touch cannot. A fibroadenoma often has a well-defined appearance, but the suitable test depends on your age, symptoms, breast tissue, and local clinical practice.
Preparing and following through
Before the visit, note medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, prior breast procedures, and any family history your clinician asks about. Wear clothing that makes the examination easy. A [Breast Ultrasound](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/breast-ultrasound/) may be recommended to view the lump. If the examination or scan leaves uncertainty, a [Breast Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/breast-biopsy/) may be discussed. For a symptomatic, enlarging, or persistently uncertain lump, ask about [Breast Lump Excision](/treatments/breast-care/breast-lump-excision/) and the reason for choosing it.
When to arrange faster review
Seek prompt assessment for a lump that enlarges quickly or feels newly fixed, or for nipple inversion, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, or breast redness with fever. A new finding should be checked even when it is soft, mobile, or painless. Keep any recommended follow-up appointment so changes can be compared over time.
Questions about the examination
Ask what the examination found, whether imaging is needed, how results will be explained, and which changes should prompt an earlier appointment.

Questions people ask
Does a fibroadenoma examination hurt?
The physical examination is usually brief; tell the clinician if pressure causes discomfort so they can adjust the approach.
Will every examination lead to a biopsy?
No. The need for tissue sampling depends on the examination and imaging findings.
