Fibroadenoma during your period: what to know

Fibroadenomas are solid breast lumps made from glandular and supporting tissue. Hormonal shifts before and during bleeding can make surrounding breast tissue feel fuller, sore, or uneven, so an existing lump may seem easier to find. The lump itself may remain mobile and firm, but your perception of its size can vary with breast tenderness. Period-related sensitivity should not be used to identify a lump by touch alone.

A new lump still needs clinical assessment, even when it becomes less noticeable after a period. Examination and imaging help distinguish a fibroadenoma from other breast changes.

Record when the lump feels different, where it is, and whether the change settles after your period. Avoid repeated checking, which can increase soreness. Arrange an appointment for a new, persistent, enlarging, or unclear lump. These signs can have several causes, but they need examination rather than monitoring through another cycle. A change that persists after your period also deserves review.

Ask whether the lump has features typical of a fibroadenoma, whether imaging should be timed around your cycle, and what change would warrant a biopsy or removal.
