What should you know about fibroadenoma changes?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and connective tissue. It may become more noticeable during hormonal shifts, including around menstrual changes, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and may later become smaller or less easy to feel. Tenderness can also vary. These patterns can occur with a fibroadenoma, yet touch alone cannot confirm why a lump has changed.

A clinician may compare the lump with earlier examinations and use breast imaging to assess its size and appearance. An ultrasound can help show whether the lump has features that fit a fibroadenoma. A biopsy may be suggested when imaging or the examination leaves uncertainty.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a lump that is new, enlarging, newly painful, or otherwise different. Note when you first noticed the change, whether it varies with your cycle, and whether there are changes in the skin or nipple. Bring any previous imaging reports if available.

Your clinician may recommend monitoring, repeat imaging, or tissue sampling. If the lump is uncomfortable, continues to enlarge, or causes significant worry, ask whether Breast Lump Excision is appropriate. Do not repeatedly press the area, because this can increase soreness and make changes harder to judge.

Seek prompt medical advice for a rapidly enlarging lump, skin dimpling, a newly inverted nipple, spontaneous bloody nipple discharge, redness with fever, or a lump in the armpit. These findings do not identify the cause by themselves, but they deserve timely examination. A breast lump that changes should not be self-diagnosed from its movement or texture.
