Fibroadenoma breast location: what to know

Clinicians describe a breast lump by side, distance from the nipple, and position on the breast, such as an upper or lower area. Fibroadenomas can arise in many parts of the breast where glandular tissue is present. They may feel like a firm, smooth, mobile lump, but touch cannot reliably identify the tissue type.

The same location can contain several different kinds of breast tissue and conditions. A lump close to the armpit may also involve tissue extending toward the underarm, while a lump near the nipple may relate to central ducts or nearby glandular tissue. Location is one clue among examination, imaging, and sometimes biopsy.

When you notice a lump, record which breast it is in, its approximate position relative to the nipple, and whether it changes during your cycle. Avoid trying to diagnose it by moving it repeatedly. Book an assessment for a new, persistent, or changing lump.

Breast Ultrasound may show the lump’s depth and structure. If imaging does not settle the diagnosis, Breast Biopsy may be recommended. When removal is appropriate because of symptoms, growth, or uncertainty, Breast Lump Excision can be discussed.

Seek prompt review if a lump enlarges quickly, becomes hard or fixed, causes dimpling or thickened skin, changes the nipple, or produces spontaneous bloody discharge. Fever with a hot, red, swollen breast also needs timely care. A location alone does not determine urgency; the associated change does.
