Fibroadenoma and getting pregnant

A fibroadenoma is a benign solid breast lump. It does not involve the reproductive organs, so having one does not by itself stop conception. During pregnancy, breast tissue responds to hormones and becomes fuller; an existing fibroadenoma may feel different or enlarge.

Not every lump noticed while trying to conceive or during pregnancy is a fibroadenoma. Tell your maternity or breast clinician about any known lump and any new change. Ultrasound is commonly used to assess breast tissue when imaging is needed during pregnancy, and a biopsy can be discussed if the findings require tissue confirmation.

Before pregnancy, ask whether your known lump has been adequately characterised and whether follow-up is needed. Keep copies of prior reports and note its location. If you are already pregnant, mention the pregnancy before any imaging or treatment is arranged.

Breast Ultrasound may help monitor a change. Breast Biopsy can be considered when examination or imaging leaves a question. Breast Lump Excision is not automatically needed before pregnancy; timing depends on symptoms, growth and diagnostic certainty.

Report a lump that grows quickly, becomes fixed, or changes in a way that is unfamiliar to you. Seek prompt advice for bloody discharge, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, armpit swelling, or redness with fever. Pregnancy can alter breast texture, but it should not be used to dismiss a persistent or concerning change.

Ask whether the lump needs imaging before conception, how it will be followed during pregnancy, and which symptoms need an earlier visit. Ask whether treatment could affect breastfeeding and whether a biopsy is appropriate if the lump changes.
