What should you know about fibreglass cast for broken wrist?

A broken wrist often involves the distal radius, although other bones can also be injured. A fibreglass cast uses a padded, moulded shell to limit movement and protect the alignment chosen by the fracture team. If the bones are out of position, a closed reduction may be performed before casting. Some unstable fractures need fixation surgery instead of, or before, a cast. The cast should feel supportive but should not create worsening pressure or numbness.

Keep the hand elevated when it is swollen, and gently move the fingers that remain free unless instructed otherwise. Keep the cast dry as directed, protect its edges, and do not place pens or objects inside it. Avoid lifting, pushing, or using the injured hand until cleared. Keep every review appointment so the fit and fracture position can be checked. After removal, physiotherapy may help restore wrist, hand, and finger movement.

Seek urgent assessment for increasing pain despite the advised plan, severe swelling, numbness, tingling that persists, inability to move the fingers, or fingers that become blue, pale, cold, or unusually tight. Call the care team for a cracked or wet cast, new rubbing, drainage, bad odour, or fever with worsening wound symptoms.

Ask which wrist movements are allowed, whether the cast can get wet, how long support is expected, when driving or work may resume, and whether reduction, surgery, or rehabilitation is part of your plan.
