What should you know about fiberglass cast waterproof?

Fibreglass forms a firm shell, but the padding or liner beneath it determines whether water can pass safely and dry afterward. A standard liner may stay damp, irritate skin, and develop an odour if soaked. A waterproof liner can tolerate approved exposure, yet the cast still needs enough time and airflow to dry. Waterproof does not mean unbreakable: pressure, sand, and unsuitable pools can damage the shell or skin.

Ask the fracture team whether your exact cast has a waterproof liner before getting it wet. If water is not approved, cover the cast securely for washing and keep it out of standing water. If water is approved, rinse away pool or sea water as instructed, allow the cast to drain, and dry the skin and edges carefully. Do not use heat or push towels inside the cast. Keep following movement and weight-bearing limits for the fracture.

Arrange a prompt review for persistent dampness, increasing itch or burning, foul smell, drainage, soft or cracked material, worsening pain, or skin breakdown. Seek urgent care for numbness, blue or cold fingers or toes, severe swelling, or loss of movement in exposed digits.
