Fiber optic illumination carries light through the instrument so the viewing tip can light the ear canal clearly. A clinician may use a small disposable speculum and gently position it at the canal entrance. The view can show wax, redness, swelling, discharge, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum.

The instrument does not measure hearing and cannot by itself confirm the cause of ear pain, pressure, dizziness, or reduced hearing. Ear anatomy is delicate, and wax or a narrow, inflamed canal can limit the view.

Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, recent swimming, injury, ear surgery, or anything placed in the ear. Keep cotton buds and other objects out of the canal. During the examination, stay still and say if the pressure becomes uncomfortable; a child may need reassurance, a familiar adult, or a child health consultation.

A GP consultation can link the ear findings with your symptoms and decide whether wax care, treatment, hearing assessment, or further review is needed. Do not borrow or share an unclean device for home examination.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, a high fever with worsening symptoms, marked dizziness, facial weakness, or an object stuck in the canal. After an injury, urgent assessment is needed if fluid or blood is leaking or hearing changes suddenly.

Ask what was visible, whether the eardrum could be seen fully, whether hearing should be checked, and which symptoms should bring you back for review.
