FFA frontal fibrosing alopecia: what to know

FFA is a type of inflammatory scarring alopecia. Inflammation around selected hair follicles can damage them and leave a smooth, less hair-bearing band near the forehead or temples. Eyebrow thinning, scalp sensitivity, redness, small facial bumps, or loss of body hair may also occur. Once a follicle is scarred, regrowth from that follicle may be limited, which is why a dermatologist may examine the scalp closely and sometimes recommend a biopsy.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the hairline is changing or eyebrows are thinning without a clear explanation. Bring photographs that show the pattern over time and a list of medicines and supplements. Treatment is chosen to reduce inflammation and slow further loss; options may include topical medicines, oral medicines, finasteride treatment in suitable patients, or steroid injection into the skin. Gentle hair care and sun protection for exposed scalp can reduce irritation.

Book a prompt appointment for progressive recession, scalp pain, burning, itch, redness, or scaling at the hairline. Seek earlier review if eyebrow loss is accompanied by eye irritation or if facial bumps are appearing. Sudden patchy loss, pus, marked tenderness, or widespread scalp inflammation may suggest another process requiring assessment.
