Fexofenadine for urticaria: what to know

Urticaria, also called hives, causes temporary itchy welts when histamine and other signals widen small blood vessels in the skin. Fexofenadine is an oral antihistamine that reduces histamine activity, so it may calm itching and limit new welts while it is active. It does not identify the trigger or treat every cause of hives. Swelling around the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat can occur with angioedema and needs separate attention.

Take fexofenadine only as directed on the product label or by your clinician. Do not take more, combine antihistamines, or change the schedule without advice. Tell a pharmacist or doctor about kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and all medicines or supplements. Some fruit juices and products containing aluminium or magnesium can affect how some fexofenadine products are absorbed, so check the specific instructions. Track when welts appear, possible triggers, and whether symptoms return between doses.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange medical review when hives keep returning, last beyond a short episode, interfere with sleep, or come with fever, bruising, pain, or illness. A clinician can check whether the pattern fits urticaria and whether another treatment is needed.
