Fever with rashes symptoms: what to know

A clinician may ask when the fever and rash began, whether spots are flat or raised, whether they blister or fade when pressed, and where they started. Viral illnesses can cause fever with widespread spots; chickenpox often brings itchy, fluid-filled blisters at different stages. A hot, painful, rapidly spreading area may point to cellulitis and needs prompt assessment. Cough, wheeze or noisy breathing can accompany respiratory infections such as COVID-19, croup or bronchiolitis.

The appearance can change quickly, especially in children. A photograph taken in good light can help show its progression, but it cannot replace an examination.

Offer frequent fluids and rest, and use light clothing rather than heavy layers. Check the person regularly and follow the label or a clinician's advice for any fever medicine; never give a child aspirin. Avoid scratching, share no towels, and limit close contact until a contagious illness has been considered. Note the temperature, medicines taken, new foods or products, and any sore throat, vomiting or breathing change.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, severe headache, fainting, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Get prompt medical advice for a rapidly spreading or painful rash, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or fever in a very young infant. Arrange assessment if the fever persists, returns, or the person is getting worse.
