Fever with nose bleeding

Dry air, rubbing, forceful blowing, or irritation can break small blood vessels in the front of the nose. Fever may occur alongside a respiratory infection such as Common Cold or COVID-19, while congestion and dry breathing can make bleeding easier to trigger. Tell a clinician about repeated bleeds, easy bruising, a recent injury, blood-thinning medicine, or a bleeding disorder.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously with thumb and finger. Breathe through the mouth and spit out blood rather than swallowing it. Once bleeding stops, avoid picking, forceful blowing, hot drinks, and strenuous exertion for a while. Sip fluids and record the fever, bleeding duration, side affected, and any medicines used. Do not tilt the head back or pack the nose with tissue.

Use urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant head or facial injury, causes faintness, makes breathing difficult, or continues despite sustained pressure. Fever with a rapidly worsening illness, confusion, severe headache, stiff neck, widespread bruising, or a rash also needs prompt assessment. Contact a clinician for recurrent nosebleeds or fever that persists, especially in a child or someone with reduced immunity.
