Fever with a cold: what should you know?

A cold can cause a raised temperature, blocked or runny nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and body aches. Fever can also occur with infections that need a different assessment, including COVID-19, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, croup, chickenpox, cellulitis, or brucellosis. The fever itself is a sign that the immune system is responding; it does not identify the cause by itself. Age, pregnancy, long-term health conditions, recent travel, and how quickly symptoms are changing all affect the safest advice.

Rest and take frequent fluids. Wear light, comfortable clothing and keep the room reasonably cool. Check your temperature with the same type of thermometer and record changes alongside cough, breathing, pain, and urine output. Use fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, and check before giving it to a child or combining products. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed, because they do not treat viral colds. Stay home while feeling unwell and improve ventilation around others.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt medical advice for an infant with fever, a person with a weakened immune system, worsening symptoms, dehydration, chest pain, or fever that continues or returns after initial improvement. A clinician can examine the throat, chest, skin, and hydration status and decide whether testing is useful.

Ask which cause best fits the symptom pattern, whether testing is appropriate, which fever medicine and dose are suitable, and what change should prompt reassessment. Mention the highest measured temperature, when it began, medicines taken, travel, sick contacts, and any breathing or hydration concerns.
