Short answer

A fever is a rise in body temperature that can signal infection or another medical problem, so check it carefully and watch how the person feels.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a fever can mean

Temperature changes during the day and readings vary with the measurement site and device. Chills, sweating, warm skin, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, or reduced appetite may occur, but a person can have an infection without every symptom. Fever is a body response, not a diagnosis by itself. It may accompany a common cold, COVID-19, acute bronchitis, cellulitis, chickenpox, or other illnesses. A fever can also follow heat exposure, inflammation, or some medicines. Record the reading, time, method, and associated symptoms so a clinician can see the pattern.

What to do at home

Offer frequent fluids and encourage rest. Use light clothing and a comfortable room; avoid heavy bundling when the person feels hot. Recheck with the same thermometer and method rather than comparing readings from different sites. Fever medicine may reduce discomfort, but follow the product directions and check suitability with a pharmacist, especially for children, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or regular medicines. Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers unless a clinician specifically advises it. Do not use cold baths or alcohol rubs.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, a seizure, severe drowsiness, confusion, a stiff neck, a new widespread rash, or signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine. Get prompt medical advice for a baby with a fever, an adult or child whose condition is worsening, or fever with severe pain, repeated vomiting, or an immune-system problem. Arrange a review when fever persists, returns after improving, or has no clear explanation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which measurement method to use, whether the pattern suggests an infection needing testing, and which medicines are safe with existing conditions. Bring the temperature record and a list of medicines, recent travel, sick contacts, and new symptoms.

Questions people ask

Is fever itself a diagnosis?

No. Fever is a sign that may occur with infection, inflammation, heat exposure, or a medicine-related reaction.

Should every fever be treated?

Treatment is mainly for discomfort and depends on the person's age, health, symptoms, and medicine safety.
