Fever symptoms

Short answer
Fever symptoms may include feeling hot or chilled, sweating, tiredness, headache, and body aches.

Symptoms that can accompany fever
A raised body temperature can occur with an infection, but how you feel matters too. Chills may happen as the temperature rises, while sweating can follow as it falls. You may notice low energy, reduced appetite, thirst, headache, muscle aches, or a faster heartbeat. Cough, sore throat, blocked nose, vomiting, diarrhoea, painful urination, or a rash can point toward the affected body system. Acute bronchitis and the common cold often present with respiratory symptoms, while cellulitis presents with a local area of painful, inflamed skin. The symptom pattern does not prove a particular condition.
Practical steps
Rest and take frequent drinks; small sips can be easier if you feel nauseated. Wear light, comfortable clothing and keep the room at a moderate temperature. If you use a thermometer, follow its instructions and record the reading with the time and your symptoms. Eat lightly as tolerated. Fever medicine may ease discomfort, but follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist about interactions, allergies, pregnancy, or liver and kidney problems. Do not give children medicines intended for adults.
Warning signs
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, a seizure, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, or a rapidly spreading rash. Seek medical advice promptly for severe headache, persistent vomiting, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, pain when urinating, or fever in a very young infant. Arrange a review when symptoms are worsening, last longer than expected, or affect someone who is pregnant, frail, or immunocompromised.
Useful questions
Tell your clinician when symptoms started, the highest reading you recorded, recent travel or sick contacts, new medicines, and any rash or breathing change. Ask what symptoms should prompt a return visit.

Questions people ask
Can I have fever without feeling hot?
Yes. Chills or shivering can occur while temperature is rising, and some people feel mainly weak or unwell.
Does every fever need antibiotics?
No. Antibiotics treat selected bacterial infections and do not treat viral illnesses; a clinician should decide whether they are appropriate.
