Fever with swelling of the hands and feet

Fever is a body response that often occurs during an infection. Swelling may develop when inflammation affects the skin, soft tissues, joints, or the body’s fluid balance. Redness, warmth, tenderness, a rash, joint pain, or swelling on one side can help a clinician narrow the cause. Cellulitis presents with fever and inflamed skin in some people. Viral illnesses such as chickenpox or COVID-19 can also cause fever with broader symptoms. Fever and swelling together do not identify one diagnosis by themselves.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and record when the fever and swelling began. Check whether the skin is hot, red, painful, blistered, or rapidly changing, and note whether both sides are affected. Remove tight rings, shoes, or bracelets before swelling increases. Keep the swollen limb comfortably supported, but avoid massage over painful or red skin. Use fever medicine only as directed on its label and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Avoid leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, severe weakness, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. Arrange prompt assessment if the swelling is painful, hot, red, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by severe pain, pus, or inability to use the limb. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity may need earlier advice. Contact a clinician if fever persists, returns, or the swelling has no clear explanation.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a skin, joint, or wider infection; whether you need an examination or tests; which fever medicine is suitable for you; and what change in the swelling should trigger re assessment.
